Service Description

The Wildlings Language Arts Program The Wildlings Language Arts Program is a nature-inspired language arts program developed by The Wildlings educator Inta Didrichsons (B.A., B.Ed.) Each week The Wildlings educators choose a literary work (a story, poem, article, or piece of music) to be the framework for the week’s activities. The day begins with the teachers introducing the students to the literary work, followed by a hike or exploration with intention of observing the forest and collecting items found in nature. The items are used to build a bridge back to the literary work introduced in the morning. Students might: create a work of art that relates in some way to the ideas of the literary work. create an object that connects to the images in the literary work practice mindfulness/self-reflection as presented in the literary works explore the character traits brought forth in the stories presented (leadership, teamwork, resourcefulness, self-reflection, and curiosity to name a few!) The day ends with a closing debrief focusing on student learning and connectivity to nature throughout the day. Students are encouraged to be aware of how nature enhances their understanding of the literary work, and also how their appreciation of nature is enhanced by making connections with the literary work. Each student will have a Language Arts nature journal in which they will chronicle what they have learned throughout the semester. The Language Arts program is differentiated to meet the expectations of all elementary grades.
