Primary Program Educator

We have a fantastic opportunity available to join our team!  Our workplace is positive, passionate, and collaborative.  Our staff support eachother and care deeply about the well being of children and about their connection to nature.  We are an inclusive employer and we offer flexible work and benefits. 

Schedule | Monday - Friday, 8:30-4:30 (Flexible hours available 30-40hrs/week)

  • Hundred Acre Wood Forest School is expanding the Primary grades (1-6) program and we are looking for a passionate and dedicated educator to add to our incredible program!

    We are a licensed non-profit childcare centre and forest school in Heathcote ON. We are situated on 100 acres of meadow and forested land, with an indoor facility that reflects our outdoor learning philosophy. Our outdoor spaces include fire pits, trails, hills to climb, climbing trees, bike tracks, natural playgrounds, and more.

    The Primary teacher will have the opportunity to add to our primary program that is self-directed, emergent, and takes place in the natural and wild setting of Hundred Acre Wood. The educator will pull from educational methods such as Montessori, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and then research and pursue their curiousities. The teacher will facilitate each child's development in the core competencies of the program.

    The ideal candidate for this role is a leader and innovator in the field of outdoor education. You have worked with the primary grades in an outdoor education setting and also have an understanding of their growth and development needs. You have experience working in a classroom setting with the Ontario curriculum. You are excited to build relationships with each child and to guide them in their learning and growth. You believe in an alternative educational model for children and can communicate it's benefits to stakeholders.

    In a medium size class ratio of 2:20. The teachers will work together while reporting to the director(s) and will follow the Hundred Acre Wood School Calendar.

    ​Duties

    -Plan and facilitate a nature based curriculum that is modern, inclusive, and exceeds industry standards

    -Apply principles of emergent learning, child-led learning, and active inquiry

    -Care for and connect with each child

    -Oversee the health and well-being of all program participants

    -Correspond professionally with parents and staff

    -Evaluate learning through observation, conversation, and work completion

    -Prepare and distribute term reports for each child

    -Perform a variety of tasks including but not limited to administrative, gardening, cleaning and cooking when possible

    Expectations

    -The primary educator is an innovative, outdoor educator who sees the endless potential of education beyond the 4 walls of the classroom

    -Must be physically able to assist children as required – (eg. Lifting, getting up and down from the floor frequently)

    -Must be prepared to dress appropriately for weather and conditions in order to be comfortable outside for long periods of time and at all times of the year ie. rain pants, bug jacket, etc.

    -Must have an understanding of centre policies and procedures and adhere to them at all times

    -The ability to provide outstanding customer service to children and parents

    -Strong communication skills via text, phone, and email

    -An affinity for the natural world – either some education in this field or self-education and experience is an asset

    -Must take pride and joy in helping young children grow

    Requirements

    -Bachelor of Education or equivalent life experience

    -At least 5 years experience working in the field of education

    -Experience in delivering outdoor education in an emergent format

    -Knowledge of play based learning and inquiry/child led learning

    -Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification

    -A clear Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening done upon job offer

The Wildlings Summer Camp Leader

Season | June 24 - August 30
Schedule | Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm
Hourly Rate |  $19-21/hr

  • Hundred Acre Wood is looking for outdoorsy, organized, kid-loving staff to lead our summer forest immersion camp programs.

    Our primary location is situated on 100 acres of meadow and forested land, with an indoor facility that reflects our outdoor learning philosophy. Our secondary location is Metcalfe Rock, surrounded by hundreds of acres of conservation land with creeks, rock faces, and caves.

    Job Duties

    -Plan and facilitate nature based programming that is modern, inclusive, and exceeds industry standards

    -Apply principles of emergent learning, child-led learning, and active inquiry

    -Create a safe and inclusive environment for all campers

    -Supervise and monitor children during activities, ensuring their safety at all times

    -Provide guidance and support to campers, promoting positive behavior and social interaction

    -Collaborate with other camp staff to coordinate daily schedules and activities

    -Assist with the setup and cleanup of camp equipment and supplies

    -Communicate with parents/guardians regarding camper progress, behavior, and any concerns

    Requirements

    -High school diploma

    -Previous experience working with groups of children in a camp or educational setting

    -An affinity for the natural world – either some education in this field or self-education and experience

    -Current Standard First Aid and CPR certification

    -A clear Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening done within the past 12 months

    -Must be physically able to assist children as required – (eg. Lifting, getting up and down from the floor frequently)

    -Must be prepared to dress appropriately for weather and conditions in order to be comfortable outside for long periods of time and at all times of the year ie. rain paints, bug jacket, etc.

    -Must have an understanding of camp policies and procedures and adhere to them at all times

    -The ability to provide outstanding customer service to children and parents

    -Strong communication skills via text, phone, and email

    -Patience, empathy, and the ability to connect with children of different ages and backgrounds

    Assets

    -National Lifeguard certification (NLS)

    -A current University or College student or graduate

    -Camp leader/teaching experience
